Multi-State Meningitis Fungal Outbreak Linked to Injections

The Food and Drug Administration is in the process of investigating a multistate outbreak of meningitis infections amongst patients receiving steroid injections in their spinal area.  Investigators believe some of these injections involved a contaminated substance which has resulted in several patients suffering strokes and other health complications.  As a result of these and numerous reports of other fungal infections associated with injections in peripheral joints such as knees, ankles, and shoulders, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has undertaken a recall of medicines associated with methylprednisolone acetate, a substance often used in epidural injections.  Investigators believe these substances have been contaminated by a noncontagious but harmful fungi causing meningitis.

Authorities are cautioning anyone exhibiting symptoms suggesting possible meningitis or peripheral joint infection to contact their physicians immediately for further evaluation.  Symptoms of fungal infections are often slow to develop, appearing 1 to 4 weeks following an injection, but include sensations such as slight weakness, worsening back pain, and even a mild headache.  Likewise, symptoms of meningitis are similarly a new or worsening headache, fever, sensitivity to light, a stiff neck, new weakness or numbness in any body parts, slurred speech, increased pain, or redness or swelling at the injection site.

If you or a loved one has received a spinal epidural injection and have experienced any of these symptoms contact your physician right away.  If you have in fact contracted meningitis or a fungal infection as a result of a steroid injection, you have rights, and a responsibility to hold those to blame for placing a harmful substance on the market, and ultimately into your body, responsible for their actions.  Contact the experienced New Jersey trial attorneys at the Clark Law Firm, PC.
