New Jersey Traffic Ticket Cases
Some traffic tickets bring with them small fines, and present nothing more than an inconvenience to drivers. However, many tickets can carry with them severe penalties, affecting your insurance, license, and often most importantly: your wallet.
Offenses such as speeding are commonly met with harsh penalties. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) applies a point system to speeding offenses, adding points on your license based on the following:
-
§ 39:4-98 – New Jersey Speeding: Exceeding maximum speed 1-14 mph over limit = 2 points
-
§ 39:4-99 – New Jersey Speeding: Exceeding maximum speed 15-29 mph over limit = 4 points
- § 39:4-99 – New Jersey Speeding: Exceeding maximum speed 30 mph or more over limit = 5 points
Upon reaching a fixed amount of points on your license, drivers are made to pay “Point Surcharges,” along with any court fees, fines, and any other penalties associated with the traffic ticket. Similarly, depending on how many points you receive on your license, your insurance premiums have the potential to increase substantially.
Likewise, dependent on the amount of points accumulated on one’s license and the amount over the speed limit the ticket was issued for, New Jersey municipal court judges are authorized to suspend a driver’s license for a 30 to 60 day period.
